Mashantucket Tribe to downsize government

Citing a downturn in the economy that has affected its revenue stream, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is downsizing its governmental operation.

The tribe is asking employees to resign voluntarily. About 1,100 employees received buyout letters, The Norwich Bulletin reported.

“Due to tribal population growth, increased costs such as health care, competition in neighboring states, and the current national economy, it is necessary to reduce the cost of government in order to preserve long-term economic stability for our tribe,” Chairman Michael Thomas said.

After the buyout period ends, the tribe might move to involuntary dismissals.
