Kiowa Tribe reopens Indian City with Shakopee help

The Kiowa Tribe has reopened Indian City USA with a $1 million grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota.

Built in 1955, Indian City houses a museum, gift shop, reconstructed tribal villages, a campground, a small buffalo herd and a ceremonial dance ground. Tourists come to the area to learn more about the Kiowas and other tribes.

The tribe bought the 200-acre site last year after it was put on the market in 2004. Modina Waters, the director of the Indian City USA Cultural Center, said the Kiowas couldn't have done it without the help of the Shakopees, one of the most philanthropic tribes in Indian Country.

Indian City USA Is open to the public every day. The grand reopening takes place May 17-18.
