Tulalip Tribes officers to be cross commissioned

Police officers for the Tulalip Tribes of Washington will be cross commissioned by Snohomish County, Washington, on Friday.

The cross commissions will enable tribal officers to arrest non-Indians on the reservation. Non-Indians will remain subject to state law.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) recently signed legislation to allow tribal police officers to enforce state criminal and traffic laws. Tribal officers must be state certified and tribes have to obtain liability insurance and waive their sovereign immunity for actions of their officers.
