Pueblo potter wins $1.2M award against gallery

The New Mexico Court of Appeals on Thursday upheld a $1.2 million judgment against an art gallery that mishandled the collection of Nancy Youngblood, a Santa Clara Pueblo potter.

Youngblood allowed Sakia Gallery of New York City to display 23 pots from her collection. Some of the pots were created by Youngblood's family members, who were among the most influential Pueblo potters of the 20th century.

The gallery somehow lost seven pots while two were damaged by a flood. So Youngblood was awarded $773,000 in punitive damages and $386,500 in compensatory damages for her loss.
