The Navajo Nation
Council voted 42-27 on Friday to ban tobacco use in public places.
The ban applies to smoking and chewing tobacco throughout the Navajo Nation. An exception allows ceremonial tobacco usage.
The tribe's gaming enterprise opposed the bill because it will apply to the tribe's first casino. Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr., who supports the casino, has not said whether he will accept or veto the ban.
