The United Auburn Indian Community of California has agreed to buy 65 acres from a developer.

The tribe will buy the land from Clover Valley Partners, which has proposed a controversial housing project that is the subject of litigation.

The purchase will protect village dwellings, rock art panels, ceremonial sites and four burial grounds.

"The conservation easement will ensure that the sites protected by the approved project, and deemed sacred by the United Auburn Indian Community, will be retained forever in their scenic natural valley setting," Chairwoman Jessica Tavares said.
