Steve Blake, a member of the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota who created the American Indian Movement logo at age 13, died on Wednesday. He was 51.

Blake became active in AIM, which his father helped found, at an early age. "He was a curious and very active young man," his mother, Norby Blake, told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

He became known for his paintings and was an experienced powwow dancer. He taught the Ojibwe language and served on the Minneapolis Police Community Relations Council.

"If someone needed help day or night, he would respond," AIM activist Clyde Bellecourt said. "If it was Red Lake or anywhere, he would go."
