Cherokee Nation chief plans bid for re-election
Chad Smith, the principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, is hoping for a fourth term in office.

Smith is asking the tribe's Supreme Court to rule he on his eligibility. At issue is whether the tribal constitution's provision on term limits applies to him.

As a separate issue, Smith is asking the court to rule on a new redistricting map that was approved by the tribal council. Smith vetoed the map but was overriden.
