Karuk Tribe loses bid to stop recreational mining
The California Department of Fish and Game won't stop a popular form of recreational gold mining despite a request from the Karuk Tribe.

The tribe believes suction dredging hurts salmon runs on the Klamath River. The department didn't disagree, but said it couldn't halt the practice because there is no emergency.

"These guys are asleep at the switch if they don't think we have an emergency in terms of fisheries," Craig Tucker, a tribal spokesperson, told The Redding Record-Searchlight.

The department said it will examine the issue to determine if changes to existing regulations are needed.
