Police recover stolen Wampanoag gravestone
Police in Lakeville, Massachusetts, are investigating the theft of a historic gravestone that marked the burial of a Wampanoag man.

The circa-1872 gravestone of Thomas Smith went missing from the Lakeville Town Forest last fall. Details of its recovery haven't been made public.

The gravestone is in the hands of a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe until officials can find a safe place for it. The tribe is holding onto three other gravestones that were removed from the forest to protect them from theft.
