Herseth Sandlin introduces tribal law and order bill
Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-South Dakota) has introduced the Tribal Law and Order Act in the House.

The bill is the companion to one introduced in the Senate last week. It seeks to improve federal and tribal law enforcement.

"The troubling accounts of officials seeking to establish law and order on reservations demonstrate that lack of adequate resources, personnel and training along with thorny jurisdictional issues contribute to this growing problem," Herseth Sandlin said. "While there will be no simple or quick fix, this comprehensive legislation is a step in the right direction."

The House version was referred to the House Judiciary Committee, the House Natural Resources Committee, the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Education and Labor Committee.

The Senate version was referred to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Both versions were introduced on April 2.
