Native youth walk 2000 miles from Canada to DC

Native youth from Canada are walking 3,000 miles from Manitoba to Washington, D.C., in hopes of meeting with President Barack Obama.

Participants in the Run for Human Rights II began their journey yesterday. They plan to arrive in the nation's capitol on October 9.

The walk seeks to raise awareness of health care, energy and other issues. affecting Native people in the U.S. and Canada.

"Rather than blaming someone else, they're taking control of their future," Ernie Cobiness told The Winnipeg Free Press of the participants. His five children, ages 10 to 20, are taking part in the walk.

The route include stops in Grand Forks, Fargo, Minneapolis and Chicago.
