The U.S. Supreme Court will hear Hawaii v. Office of Hawaiian Affairs on Wednesday.

The case affects 1.2 million acres of Native Hawaiian land. The state says it can do what it wants with the land without resolving the status of Native Hawaiians as a legal entity.

Congress has been considering legislation to extend the policy of self-determination to Native Hawaiians. President Barack Obama supports the bill.

The Hawaii Supreme Court blocked the sale, exchange or transfer of the land in a January 2008 decision.
