A non-Indian woman is being blamed for a fatal accident that the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida has been criticized for investigating.
An expert and an attorney for the tribe both concluded that Tatiana Furry, 31, caused the January 21 accident that took her life. Furry's car collided with a vehicle carrying three tribal members, who had to be hospitalized.
Furry was reportedly drinking at the tribe's casino before the accident. It occurred on a stretch of the Tamiami Trail that is not part of the reservation, according to The Miami Herald.
The tribe has defended its handling of the accident but has refused to turn over documents to local prosecutors. Florida is a Public Law 280 state.
