House committee advances two recognition bills
The House Natural Resources Committee approved two federal recognition bills at a markup this morning.

H.R.31 extends recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. A substitute was adopted to ensure the tribe can follow the land-into-trust process.

H.R.1385 extends recognition to the Chickahominy Tribe, the Chickahominy Tribe-Eastern Division, the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, the Rappahannock Tribe, the Monacan Nation, and the Nansemond Tribe. A substitute also addressed the land-into-trust issue.

Both bills passed the House during the 110th Congress. The Lumbee bill has the backing of President Barack Obama.
