Federal court dedicates Standing Bear exhibit
The federal district courthouse in Omaha, Nebraska, is dedicating a permanent display to Ponca Chief Standing Bear.

Standing Bear and his people lived in Nebraska before being forced to Oklahoma. He was arrested when he tried to return home, an incident that led to a famous court decision in 1879 that recognized the rights of individual Indians.

The dedication ceremony takes place today and is accompanied by a performance of "Ma-chu-nahzha: I am a Person," a play about Standing Bear that was written by a law clerk.
