The Lummi Nation of Washington is seeking $24.4 million to recover from the collapse of the sockeye fishery.

Late summer runs of sockeye have dwindled to near nothing, The Bellingham Herald reports. "I used to gross probably $40,000, $50,000 a year on sockeye," Richard Finkbonner, 79, a Lummi fisherman, told the paper. "I got one last year."

About $17 million would be used salmon and shellfish hatchery improvements and the rest would go to individual fishermen.
