Nebraska commemorates Ponca Chief Standing Bear
The state of Nebraska is honoring the legacy of Chief Standing Bear today.

The Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs and the Chief Standing Bear Planning Committee are hosting a breakfast and commemoration to recognize the Ponca leader. This is the 130th anniversary of the court ruling that said American Indians were "persons" under U.S. law.

The Poncas was forced to move to Oklahoma in the late 1800s. Standing Bear and others were arrested when they tried to return to their homelands in Nebraska.
