Judge asked to reconsider Wampanoag land claim
Two members of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts are asking a federal judge to reconsider their land claim.

Amelia Bingham and her son, Steven, sued to reclaim land that belonging to their ancestors. But Judge George O'Toole ruled they lacked standing to sue on behalf of the tribe and on behalf of the Wampanoags who signed a deed at issue in the case.

The Binghams now say they can prove they are descendants of the some of the Wampanoags who signed the deed. They filed an amended complaint in their lawsuit against the town of Mashpee and the state of Massachusetts.

The tribe's federal recognition was finalized in May 2007.
