The Obama administration has extended a deadline for tribal and state governments to comply with the Adam
Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act.
Tribes and states were facing a July 27 deadline to develop sex offender registry systems. Attorney General Eric Holder granted a one-year extension to July 27, 2010.
Additional, one-year extensions can be made by application to the SMART office at the Department of Justice.
Tribes already passed one deadline to decide whether they wanted to take part in the Adam Walsh Act.
Those that didn't opt in, or were unable to because they are in Public Law 280 states, will have sex offender registration and monitoring handled by the state.
