Judge upholds conviction of Abramoff associate
A federal judge refused to overturn the conviction of an associate of jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

David Safavian, a former lobbyist for the National Indian Gaming Association, was convicted in 2006 of lying about his ties to Abramoff. But he was granted a new trial by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

A jury convicted Safavian last December, based on a second round of charges. He asked for an acquittal, or for a new trial, both of which were rejected by a judge on Wednesday.

The second indictment included a charge that Safavian lied to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, which was investigating Abramoff. He was acquitted of that charge.
