A California man who pleaded guilty to illegally excavating an ancestral village of the Yurok Tribe was sentenced to 30 days in jail, 60 hours of community service and a $530 fine.
James Edward Truhls faced up to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine. Tribal members asked the judge to impose the maximum sentence for the crime.
Truhls was arrested after he posted a YouTube video of himself digging
in Patrick's Point
State Park. Authorities found a collection of artifacts he had taken from
the site at his home.
