Eastern Cherokees in plans for detention facility
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will use an $18 million Department of Justice grant to build a detention facility on the North Carolina reservation.

The tribe is putting $2 million into the project. But Brandon Stephens, the tribe's building construction manager, said the jail could cost more than $20 million, depending on the size and other factors.

Currently, the tribe houses its inmates with Swain County. The county sheriff said the tribe spends upwards of $450,000 a year on the arrangement.
