Native man apologizes for shooting toddler on reserve
A man from the Samson Cree Nation in Alberta apologized for a drive-by shooting that permanently injured a toddler.

Christopher Crane, 20, said he was drunk and high at the time of the April 13, 2008, shooting. He had been spending his $40,000 royalty check on alcohol and drugs.

"I was on pills and I was drinking and smoking weed all day," Crane told the court, CBC News reported. "I was blacked-out drunk. I can hardly remember."

Crane shot at a home because he believed it was owned by gang members. He ended up injuring Asia Saddleback, who was 23 months old at the time. She has a bullet lodged in her spine that doctors won't remove because it's too risky.

Authorities say about a dozen gangs are active on the reserve.
