Editorial: 'Joe Raider' mascot set for chopping block

"There is a job opening for a logo and mascot designer. He or she must be incapable of original thought and at all times terrified of offending anyone. All designs must be totally meaningless and completely forgettable.

Applications should be sent to Kelly Brown. He is the superintendent of schools and programs for the Near North District School Board.

When applying any mention of this column may be dangerous.

Brown deserves much public sympathy. It seems he is charged with imposing political correctness upon Chippewa Intermediate and Secondary School.

Joe Raider, its widely beloved mascot, must be replaced; the school logo must be sanitized. According to reports, even the school spirit must be rehabilitated. Brown may need prayer as much as sympathy

School spirit, like community spirit and patriotism, emanates from the ground up. It comes from history and the soul but no challenge is too great for the bureaucratic pedagogue.

Joe Raider has outraged some people and some First Nation leaders concluded that the Chippewa mascot denigrates aboriginals."
