A museum in Kansas will repatriate a replica of a grass lodge and 5 painted clay figurines to the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes of Oklahoma.
The Towanda Historical Museum doesn't receive federal funds so it doesn't have to comply with the Native American Graves
Protection and Repatriation Act. But officials said there was only one option for the items.
"We didn't have to give these things back," . Hank Burchard, the museum's treasurer, told The Oklahoman. "But it is the only thing that crossed our mind."
Tribal leaders are headed to Kansas on Thursday to discuss the repatriation of the items.
