Mohegan Tribe chooses first woman chief since 1600s

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut has named Lynn Malerba as its chief.

Malerba is the 17th chief of the tribe. She is the first woman named to the post since the 1600s, The New London Day reported.

Malerba was elected chairwoman of the tribal council last October, another first. She will give up that position when she is sworn in as chief in August.

The post was vacant following the death of former chief Ralph Sturges in 2007.
