GAO to look at law enforcement issues in Indian Country
The Government Accountability Office will study law enforcement in Indian Country.

According to The Sioux Falls Argus Leader, the GAO will look at three main issues: how the Interior Department and Justice Department work together to address crime in Indian Country, why federal prosecution declined to prosecute certain violent and nonviolent crimes between 2005 through 2009; and what residents of certain reservations in South Dakota, North Dakota, Arizona and New Mexico think about tribal courts and the federal government's response to crime.

The study was requested by Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota) and Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyoming), the chairman and vice chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, and Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota).
