The Santa Fe Indian School community in New Mexico has been reaching out to a grieving Navajo Nation family.

The Peshlakai family lost sisters Deshauna and Del Lynn in a fatal accident earlier this month. Deshauna's basketball team, from Newcomb High School on the Navajo Nation, had just played SFIS in Santa Fe.

Since the March 5 accident, the SFIS community has raised more than $3,000 to help the family. The school held an honoring ceremony for the Peshlakais on Monday.

"I don't have time to grieve or mourn my daughters because of you people. All the support and love you've shown me just made me strong, even all the way out here in Santa Fe. All your love and support — nobody could ask for more," said the girls' father David Peshlakai, The Albuquerque Journal reported.

James Ruiz, 34, has been charged with counts of vehicular homicide and one count of driving with a revoked or suspended license for the deaths of the sisters. David and his wife, Darlene Thomas, suffered serious injuries.
