Mashpee Wampanoag elder hailed as 'pioneering woman'
Amelia Bingham, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts, has received the Pioneering Women Award from Cape Cod Community College.

Bingham, 89, has a long history in tribal issues. She helped incorporate the tribal council, served as the first Massachusetts Commissioner of Indian Affairs and worked as a coordinator for the White House Conference on Indian Education.

More recently, Bingham's complaints against the tribe's former chairman led to his indictment on federal charges. She's now pursuing a land claim against the state.

“I think I’m a little outspoken,” Bingham told The Barnstable Patriot . "But I just can’t quit. It’s one of those things.”

Bingham will be presented with the award on March 30.
