Campo Band ends controversial plan for reservation landfill
The Campo Kumeyaay Nation of California dropped plans for a controversia landfill on the reservation.

Chairwoman Monique LaChappa said the project is no longer in the tribe's best interests. She cited opposition from younger tribal members who are worried about the impact of the landfill on the environment.

The tribe wanted to lease 1,150 acres on the reservation to BLT Enterprises. The landfill would have accepted 3,000 tons of garbage a day for 30 years.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs had started the review process for the lease but tribal members held a special meeting to kill the deal with BLT.
