NYT: The Sopranos meets Indian Country in 'Scalped' series
"Welcome to the world of “Scalped.” Setting: South Dakota’s fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation. Volume six of this series, published by Vertigo and written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by R.M. Guera, enters the softcover list at no. 5 this week. “Scalped,” with all its betrayal, violence and sex, has been aptly described as “The Sopranos” on an Indian reservation.

The series revolves around Dashiell Bad Horse, who returns to the reservation he left behind as a teenager. Now he’s working undercover for the F.B.I. to bring down Lincoln Red Crow, the powerfully corrupt casino owner. But that’s easier said than done when complicated family dynamics come into play. Bad Horse’s mother, Gina, has a history with Red Crow: they were members of an activist group that were on the scene of the murder of two F.B.I. agents who entered the reservation in 1975. That event is based on the real life of American Indian activist Leonard Peltier who is in prison."
