The Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has revoked funding for the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, a domestic violence shelter on the reservation.

The tribal council voted 12-0 to stop sending federal funds to the shelter based on unfounded allegations, Tillie Black Bear said. She said tribal leaders never gave the society a chance to answer to the concerns.

"We were just a phone call away, for us to go over and share with the council our response to these allegations," Black Bear, the society's executive director, told The Rapid City Journal. "But they never called us."

According to Black Bear, some of the complaints were generated by a woman who was kicked out of the shelter for hitting her children. She also said some tribal leaders are biased against women.

Black Bear hopes to respond to the allegations at a council meeting on July 30.
