Members of the Shiprock Chapter of the Navajo Nation voted against hosting this year's Shiprock Navajo Fair.

The fair has become controversial in recent years. Although it attracts over 100,000 people to Shiprock, the chapter says it doesn't much of the revenues, and residents don't like to deal with the trash and other problems associated with the big event.

"I told the chapter I don't want any fair on the land," Annie King, who owns the grazing rights to the land where the fair is hosted, told The Farmington Daily Times. "Since 1930, my paternal grandfather has coordinated the fair on my family's land, but back then there was no disuse. There will be no fair because of the way the board is using money."

The chapter has requested an investigation into Shiprock Navajo Fair Inc, the non-profit that operates the event.
