Modoc Nation seeks federal recognition outside of Klamath Tribes
About 100 members of the Klamath Tribes of Oregon as seeking federal recognition as the Modoc Nation.

The Modocs say they have been living under the "oppressive yoke of the Klamath government." The split dates to the Modoc War of 1872-1873.

"The Modocs are just a captive group," secretary of state Perry Chesnut told The Klamath Falls Herald and News.

The Klamath Tribes are a confederation of Klamath, Modoc and Yahooskin tribes. Some Modocs were removed to Oklahoma, where they are part of the recognized Modoc Tribe.
