School prepares to retire controversial 'Fighting Sioux' nickname
The University of North Dakota will officially retire its controversial "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo by August 15, 2011.

The school entered into a settlement with the NCAA to eliminate the name unless it could gain the support of two Sioux tribes in the state. The Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation voted to support the name but the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe maintained its stance against it.

The NCAA put the "Fighting Sioux" on its list of hostile and abusive Indian mascots.
