Film explores life of Radmilla Cody, a former Miss Navajo Nation
Radmilla Cody, a former Miss Navajo Nation, is the subject of a new film titled "Hearing Radmilla."

Cody, 34, is Navajo and African-American. "There had never been a part-Black Miss Navajo," Cody told The Farmington Daily Times. "But the title was bittersweet. I was fulfilling a childhood dream, but I was also dealing with the controversy."

Despite criticism, Cody served as a role model to young Navajos and enjoyed success with recording of traditional songs. But her life took a dramatic turn when she pleaded guilty for her role in a drug trafficking scheme that centered around her former boyfriend.

Cody now speaks out against domestic violence. "I want victims to know they are not alone, and that there are individuals like me who understand what they are going through," she told the paper.
