Letter: Fighting Sioux nickname a tribute to proud tribesmen
"Athletes at UND have for decades taken to the field in honor of the team’s namesake, the Fighting Sioux. Early tribesmen displayed their great strength as defenders. They were skilled and courageous in their approach to those who opposed them, and they took pride in their way of life.

Some descendants of those early tribesmen apparently believe the best of those character traits have been lost on the generations and are embarrassed by it. Unwilling to be compared to their elders, some decided that the current generation should take offense at the use of the Fighting Sioux name by UND athletes, who honored it.

The university offers about 30 credit hours in American Indian studies. It’s hard to believe that those same people would not be equally offended by such activity on campus."
