Jake Swamp, Mohawk spiritual teacher, passes away at age 68
Jake Swamp, a Mohawk spiritual leader from New York, died on October 15. He was 68.

Swamp Mohawk sub-chief and ambassador of the Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) confederacy for more than 30 years. He presided over ceremonies, including birth and marriage ceremonies, counseling and funeral rites, Indian Country Today reported.

Swamp founded the Akwesasne Freedom School, a Mohawk language immersion school, in 1979. He also founded the Tree of Peace Society in 1984 to further Haudenosaunee teachings.
