Sen. Lieberman expected to announce decision to retire in 2012

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) won't seek re-election in 2012, according to news reports.

Lieberman, who left the Democratic party in 2006, had a mixed record on Indian issues. At one point he was well liked in Indian Country, particularly when he was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000.

But Lieberman soon distanced himself from Connecticut's tribes after voters there became upset about federal recognition, land-into-trust and gaming issues. He sought to cast himself as a reformer in those areas, although no major changes came about through his efforts.

However, he was one of the original sponsors of the bill that became the Tribal Law and Order Act.
