Cheyenne River Sioux man named Secretary of Tribal Relations

Leroy "J.R." LaPlante, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, has been named the first Secretary of Tribal Relations in South Dakota.

LaPlante is an attorney who serves as the chief judge and court administrator for the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. He also worked for his own tribe.

"J.R. is well-respected across the state, and he will help me to work with our tribes toward a better future for all South Dakotans," Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) said in a press release.

Daugaard elevated the Office of Tribal Government Relations to a Cabinet-level position.
