Bills introduced to extend federal recognition to Virginia tribes

Two bills have been introduced in the 112th Congress to extend federal recognition to six tribes in Virginia.

H.R.783 and S.783 were both introduced on February 17.

The bills would recognize the Chickahominy Tribe; the Chickahominy Indian Tribe - Eastern Division; the Upper Mattaponi Tribe; the Rappahannock Tribe; the Monacan Indian Nation; and the Nansemond Indian Tribe.

A similar bill passed the House during the 111th Congress but it never came to a vote in the Senate.
