Chumash Tribe donates Samala-English dictionaries to schools

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians has donated Samala-English dictionaries to local schools and libraries in California.

The “Samala-English Dictionary — A Guide to the Samala Language of the Ineseno Chumash People” features 600 pages of words, photographs and illustrations. The tribe created the book in 2008 as part of its language restoration effort.

The last fluent speaker of Samala died in the 1960s.
