White Earth Band takes aim at high diabetes rate on reservation

With 30 percent of the reservation suffering from diabetes, the White Earth Band of Ojibwe Indians in Minnesota is helping members and employees combat the disease.

All tribal employees get a free membership to six fitness centers on the reservation. Others can use the services for little to no cost.

“We’re just trying to make exercise accessible for people,” Community Health Education and Diabetes Project Manager LaRaye Anderson told The Detroit Lakes Tribune. “The goal is to get people up and moving.”

The tribe also publishes a cookbook aimed at people with diabetes and hosts bingo games to raise awareness of the disease and how to prevent and control it.
