Opinion: No one benefits from secret tribal governments

"In my April 9, 2011, column I detailed the secret government of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, specifically as it pertained to the Tribal Court and Police department. I may be biased, but I feel that if the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe continues to accept state and federal tax dollars on a regular basis that a fair exchange would be for the Tribe to become open to the U.S. taxpayer and end the lunacy of a closed government.

This style of governance may work well for the dictatorships in Libya or Syria as a method to repress dissent, but there should be no place in our society for this type of system.

As much as I would like to investigate the U.S. taxpayer dollars funneled to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, I will leave that as fodder for another column.

This particular column will instead debunk the idea that a secret tribal government does not impact anyone other than the members of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. I would also like to explore the simplistic suggestion offered to me that non-tribal members should mind their own business and keep their noses out of tribal affairs."
