Cheyenne-Arapaho protest targets BIA in leadership fight

Members of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma held a protest outside a Bureau of Indian Affairs office on Tuesday.

Leslie Harjo led the protest in hopes of forcing the BIA to recognize her as the legitimate governor of the tribe. Harjo says the tribe's court has removed Janet Boswell from the post.

Boswell, however, maintains that she is in charge. The regional director for the Southern Plains office agreed with her but his decision is being reconsidered.

Harjo said the BIA has contacted her to talk about the dispute.
