House Appropriations Committee hears from tribal leaders

Representatives of more than 30 tribes testified before the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday.

The Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies held a morning session and an afternoon one to hear about Indian issues. Tribal leaders said federal funding is an essential part of the trust relationship.

"We do need some help, and I just wanted to come say that we have this unique relationship through the treaty that must be honored," Oglala Sioux Tribe President John Yellow Bird Steele told lawmakers, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported.

The committee also took testimony from tribal leaders this morning.
