Senate Indian Affairs Committee plans hearing on NAGPRA

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold an oversight hearing on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act on Thursday, June 16.

NAGPRA became law in 1990. It requires federal agencies and institutions that receive federal funds to repatriate ancestral remains and artifacts to tribes, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians.

A Government Accountability Office from July 2010 said federal agencies haven't complied with NAGPRA even after 20 years.

The hearing will take place at 2:15pm in Room 628 of the Senate Dirksen Office Building. A witness list hasn't been posted online.
