Sault Tribe hires governor's former attorney as its counsel

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan has hired a new general counsel.

John Wernet has extensive experience in Indian law, first with the Michigan attorney general's office. He served as counsel to the Michigan Commission on Indian Affairs, as first Assistant in the Indian Law Unit and as Assistant in Charge of the Native American Affairs Division.

More recently, he served as deputy legal counsel to former governor Jennifer Granholm (D). He handled tribal affairs for the governor, whose term ended in January.

"John Wernet is a superior attorney and a high quality person with distinguished credentials and a stellar reputation, and we are thrilled to have him as our new general counsel,” Vice Chair Lana Causley said in a press release.
