Quechan Nation elects first new president in over 16 years

The Quechan Nation has a new leader for the first time since 1995.

Keeny Escalanti, who served four terms as vice president, was elected president on May 23. He defeated incumbent Mike Jackson Sr. for the position.

Tribal members also ousted most of the council. Only one incumbent won re-election.

“It's a new day for everybody,” elder Vernon Smith, the father of a new council member, told The Yuma Sun.

The Quechan Nation is located in Arizona and California.
